and i know it sounds like "what, that'll make it too easy!" but if this was done, difficulty could be emphasized in the battles themselves, not in endurance.
Something i would change about the game, and about the pokemon formula in general, is to auto-heal the player after battles. it makes finally winning the battles satisfying. in other rpgs, losing is much more commonplace, and i found myself losing a similar amount in renegade too. from a difficulty standpoint, that's not very challenging. I think the norm in pokemon is that most people beat gym leaders on their first try, maybe wiping out once or twice against the harder ones. yes, it's challenging, but it's not impossible or grindy. I really like the game too! i think a lot of people get scared off by the difficulty in hacks, but renegade does difficulty well. Thank you Renegade Platium for being the perfect balance.
But that's just not at all what makes Pokemon fun. Anyone can toxic stall with recover and protect. You are basically encouraged to cheese it. You can't just play smart with "any team". Even with all that, and this is true for Emerald Kaizo too, your success often relied on RNG and you could just reload the game over and over until you got luckier than the AI with landing hits and wasting turns with confusions or status effects. You NEED to change your team battle to battle to account for the opponent. You NEED to get a meta team with ideal IVs and nature's and coverage. Again difficulty spike isn't the issue, just the way you as the player are meant to deal with that difficulty spike was so "my way or the high way".
Their philosophy on team building, forced upon rules, and even the questionable balance or stat updates they made just rubbed me the wrong way. With Radical Red, the game felt very very restrictive in terms of how the creator wanted you to play. Kaizo especially was just more difficult, which is fine but with that difficulty spike I didn't feel a sense of new discovery or adventure simply because the QOL upgrades and mon variety wasn't there. Abd they just totally didn't do it for me compared to Renegade Platinum. Who hasn't always wanted Charizard to be dragon type? And who would have thought a buffed version of Ledian could be such a powerhouse?įor reference, I tried other ROM hacks, most popular ones being Emerald Kaizo and Radical Red. By far my favorite is the stat and type adjustment for certain pokemon. It has everything you could want: expanded roster, more difficult trainer fights with boss fights especially being difficult but fair due to meta movesets and optimal IV/nature, and so much quality of life adjustments. And I want to say far and away the best ROM hack I played has been Renegade Platinum.
I just got into the ROM hack community a few weeks ago so I've been experimenting with a lot of different games.
